New Public Libraries Portal A World First
Friday 13 September 2002
In a world first, a partnership between New Zealand Public Libraries and Datacom has created a portal that will provide access to Public Library resources from across the country. The web address is <www.libraries.org.nz>
The portal is the result of a collaboration between Datacom and Metronet, a group comprising the 18 largest public library systems in New Zealand.
Nearly 60 public libraries with over 180 branches, from Invercargill to the Far North, can be accessed via this new portal.
New Zealanders can now have easy access to a vast array of resources available through public library catalogues and on line databases. Links to other related sites will also be available.
The site will be useful to both visitors to New Zealand and locals, as it provides an overview of what libraries in New Zealand offer and where they are located.
By simply providing greater access to all Public Library sites in New Zealand access to information is instantly greater, enabling people to find out what they want and need to know more easily and quickly.
Metronet spokesperson, Chris Szekely says " We are very pleased to be launching the portal at this time as this is New Zealand Libraries week. Libraries from all sectors throughout the country including schools and universities, have been actively promoting library services and the value of information. This is exactly what the New Zealand Public Libraries seeks to achieve".
